Workshop on Chinese Directionals: History and Dialectal Variation, in conjunction with the 6th Cross-Strait Conference on Chinese Historical Grammar
Meeting Description:
Directionals are forms like sh\ang 上, xi\a 下 and l|ai 來, q\u 去 that frequently occur in Chinese to complement main verbs in a V+DIR structure. Stemming from motions verbs evolving into verbal complements, they sometimes grammaticalize into functional markers with further depleted lexical meaning. Across modern Chinese dialects, directionals vary with respect to differing co-occurrence restrictions with main verbs, and disparate functions in signaling spatial and aspectual relations. This two-day workshop aims to provide an informal arena for international colleagues interested in linguistic issues related to directionals in Chinese to freely exchange relevant data, ideas, and research expertise. By incorporating the dimension of cross-dialectal typological variations, it will be the objective of this workshop to pursue a deeper understanding of the nature and evolution of directionals, as well as of their place in linguistic typology.

Workshop on Tibeto-Burman Languages of Sichuan (四川境內藏緬語國際研討會)
Dates:
November 21-22, 2008
Venue:
2nd Conference Rm, 3rd Floor, South Wing, Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan.
Meeting Description:
Sichuan and abutting areas are home to a good number of little-explored Tibeto-Burman languages and dialects, including many Tibetan varieties, Ngwi (Yi) languages, and over a dozen little-studied languages tentatively classified under a putative ‘Qiangic’ branch. Many of the latter group contain certain interesting properties, including large segmental inventories, uncommon tonality systems, topography-based spatial deixis, prohibitive marking with dental-stop-onset prefixes, nominal classification via existential verbs, and grammatical structure governed by animacy hierarchy. Do these features point to a shared genetic relationship, or do they simply reflect deeply entrenched borrowings in a time-honoured linguistic area? These and other intriguing questions remain to be answered. The languages of this region are hence extremely important for the proper understanding of the linguistic history and typological diversity of the vast Tibeto-Burman family.
This workshop, dedicated specifically to Tibeto-Burman Languages of Sichuan, aims to foster international cooperation and stimulate cross-fertilization of research efforts by providing an arena for scholars actively engaged in field research on these languages to share research ideas, results, and methodology.
